Broadband communications may be provided to the subscriber by means of various media including coaxial cable, optical fibre, satellite, or fixed point-to-point terrestrial microwave radio links. Millimetric radio is used where there is a need for short distance communications, preferably with a line of sight path between antennas. It is an alternative to optical fibre with the advantages of flexibility, ease and speed of installation, and has the advantage over the lower microwave frequencies of available spectrum, and smaller, easily mounted antennas, which are less obtrusive. The authors describe some of the characteristics of fixed point-to-multipoint systems operating in the millimetric band and how these could support broadband communications in some areas
