Abstract
As commercial interest in open-source software development grows,
an apparent conflict between the cultures of open source and capitalism
threatens to derail the movement's momentum. In fact, the character and
operation of both are shaped at many levels by an important, shared
ethos: the value of individual freedom. The paper discusses the value of
open-source development and considers open-source hacking
