Recent progress on multi-core fiber and few-mode fiber

This paper reviews research activities concerning multi-core fiber, few-mode fiber and few-mode multi-core fiber. The characteristic of the 12-core fiber that was used for the first 1-Pb/s/fiber transmission experiments is presented.
