Abstract:

IPTV platforms based on P2P technology provide an effective solution for distributing a high number of real-time multimedia streams to a large audience. Each participant may request an arbitrary subset of the provided streams, so that the total demand behavior in the system can fluctuate considerably. Hence, to maintain and to optimize service-quality as well as attack-robustness, an IPTV system has to dynamically adapt to the changing popularity of its streams. In this article, we study streaming topologies aiming to minimize the maximum packet loss that can occur due to an attack or failure of nodes. We prove that a set of intuitive requirements suffices to form IPTV streaming topologies that are very close to optimally attack-stable IPTV topologies and give worst-case stability bounds. Furthermore, we study how these requirements can be achieved in a distributed IPTV system and evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques.
