Study on the Stress of 500 MHz NMR Magnet Coils With Detailed FE Model

A superconducting magnet was developed for high magnetic field nuclear magnetic resonance by the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The superconducting coils are fabricated with various superconducting wires in diameter to improve the performance of the magnet. For adjacent coils mechanically dependent, large difference in diameter of superconducting wires will increase the electromagnetic stress between one coil and the neighbor. In the paper, a detailed finite element model for solenoid magnets was developed using the program ANSYS and employed to solve the stress caused by the diameter change of superconducting wires. The reasonable range of the diameter of superconducting wires of adjacent coils is presented.
