A space solar thermophotovoltaic power system

A solar thermophotovoltaic (STPV) power system is a competitive option for future space missions. This paper describes the principle of operation of a STPV system, the conceptual design of the thermophotovoltaic (TPV) conversion unit and some of the operating features which make it attractive for space applications. McDonnell Douglas Aerospace (MDA) has conducted over 550 hours of on-Sun tests using a 90 kW/sub t/ solar concentrator and additional smaller scale laboratory tests. During these tests, various materials and components have been tested at temperatures above 1300/spl deg/C. The results of these tests have been used to verify analytical models of the subsystems. These models were integrated into a simulation to estimate the system performance. A summary of the on-Sun testing, small scale laboratory testing and estimate of system efficiency is presented. The mass and performance characteristics of a 25 kW/sub e/ space system are presented.
