Small signal stability analysis of large scale variable speed wind turbines integration

With the penetration of wind energy is becoming higher and higher in power systems, it’s necessary to investigate the impact of wind generations on small signal stability. This paper discusses small signal stability of large scale variable speed wind turbines with doubly fed induction generator integration, as they has the ability to vary their operating speed in order to gain optimum power extraction from the wind. Two types of small disturbances include line trip and load variations are used to analyze the impact. The small signal stability boundaries for power system with high penetration of wind farm are computed in this paper through bifurcation analysis. Hopf. bifurcations and minimum distances to small-signal stability boundaries in the control parameters space are determined. Modal analysis and time domain simulation are carried to analyze the small disturbance dynamic behavior. Finally, the IEEE 14 bus benchmark system is used to demonstrate the small signal stability analysis.
