Reconfigurable UWB antenna operating in two different sub-bands

In this paper a novel design of a wideband antenna that can operate in two different, complementary UWB sub-bands is presented. The proposed antenna is a dual layer design, consisting of a microstrip feed line with embedded PIN diodes on the back side of the board, and a circular slot with an elliptical patch within on the front side of the board. It can be switched between two states, one covering the lower frequency range 3.1-6 GHz, and the other one covering the upper frequency range 6-10.6 GHz. Operation principles are explained in detail and the antenna performance in both sub-bands is confirmed by fullwave analysis.
