The effectiveness of commercially available distribution automation equipment was tested. The reliability of the equipment was also a key consideration in the evaluation. Two utilities were selected to participate in this project. Three distribution automation systems utilizing two-way power-line carrier communication were selected for testing. Two of these systems were already operational to some extent. They were refurbished and upgraded for this project. A third system was purchased for installation. Experiences related to operation of pilot distribution automation systems are described. Data gathered on failure of equipment are included. As a part of this project, a microcomputer program was developed for cost/benefit analysis of eight distribution automation functions. Salient features of this program are discussed and results of an example are presented
