After highlighting the difficulties linked to the characterisation of tyre behaviour, this paper gives an overview of existing tyre models. It presents an alternative to today's most commonly used model-Pacejka's model (1997)-so as to meet the conditions imposed by critical situations (under and oversteering). The use of a sophisticated tyre model inevitably requires a test bench. Based on an estimator of the strain and stress for partial wrench at the wheel-ground contact patch, (specially developed in the laboratory) an original method has been perfected for the building of a tyre model from real test. This model is used for the generation of a multidimensional description table meant for real time applications of active safety
