The research work presented in this paper is based on the concrete background of a group decision support system (GDSS) and on modelling and abstracting the process of the GDSS. The paper presents the design of a general GDSS based on multi-agent approaches. In this design, we have abstracted a suite of procedures which can allow communication between the general GDSS system's coordinator (server) and its decision-maker (customer). It overcomes the limitations of traditional systems and can be used for group decision-making in many fields. This paper focuses on introducing the design that many components were given, in the form of the Component Object Model (COM), and the idea of an “agent” was embodied in the design of these components. It offers some universal components for GDSS system developers, including a GDSS communication component, a GDSS site monitor agent component, a cryptogram agent component, a preference agent component, an alternation agent component, a cooperation agent component, etc. A prototype has been implemented
