We analyze the performance of an adaptive smart antenna system adopting synchronous code division multiple access scheme. Time-division duplex is also employed as one of primary multiple access schemes, the carrier frequencies for the uplink and downlink are the same. In a time-division duplex system, the uplink array response vector of the mobile terminal can be used as the downlink weight vector for adaptive smart antennas. With synchronous code division multiple access scheme, adaptive smart antennas at the base station can enhance the system capacity, reduce co-channel interference, combat multipath fading, and reduce the transmission power requirement on a mobile terminal. As a general model of the fading channel, tapped delay line models are used for indoor and vehicular test environments. Convolutional coding is also employed to enhance the system performance. Throughout the computer simulations, the probability of bit errors are presented for uplink and downlink transmission.
