Some design aspects of tapered and straight stator pole 6:4 switched reluctance machine

This paper describes the design optimisation of a 6:4 medium power (50 kW) switched reluctance motor (SRM) with tapered and straight stator poles. The finite element analysis method (FEM) is directly used in the optimisation algorithm to optimise the machine in multidimensions. The optimisation is focused on the maximisation of the average phase-torque/copper losses of the machine. The static torque characteristics of both the tapered and the straight pole SRMs have been compared. It is found that tapering the stator poles improves the peak torque and average torque of the SRM significantly while the torque ripple is found to be very much the same for both machines.
