Biomedical engineering as a health care discipline

It has now been more than three decades since biomedical engineering (BME) programs started being offered in universities. However, whereas BME has contributed significantly to the development of prostheses and organ-assistive technologies, it has not been integrated into the healthcare delivery profession and has yet to mature and be accepted as a healthcare discipline. To this end, it is necessary to design appropriate BME programs to recognize and address the professional arenas of BME in tertiary clinical care, public health services and industry.
