Performance calculation of a cellular radio uplink system with power control over fading channels

Detailed formulas in closed or approximate forms for calculating the distribution of the received bit energy-to-total noise ratio are presented. The parameters of Rayleigh fading statistics are obtained from the multipath intensity profile (MIP) with exponential shape. No predetermined number of effective multipaths is required, and it is decided during the computation. The saddlepoint method can much reduce the complexity of calculation to be linear with the number of interferers. Approximations are derived for a large processing gain. Various models of mobile locations are discussed. A self-avoiding walk (SAW) model is shown. Uniform models for square and hexagonal cells are derived. Methods for computing the bit error rate (BER) are shown for receivers with equal gain combiner (EGC) and selective combiner (SC).
