In this paper, we propose congestion-aware multipath routing protocol called MAOMDV-LB for multi-radio Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN's). The protocol calculates the occurrence of congestion by monitoring and reporting average queue utilization thresholds of multiple interfaces as QoS parameter and uses multiple paths to balance the load during the periods of congestion to improve quality of service. WMNs have recently gained a lot of popularity due to their rapid deployment, instant communication capabilities and support for many types of application. But, the real-time multimedia applications require quality of service (QoS) support for effective communication. For these applications, network congestion is the main reason for lower throughput and longer delay. Most of the present routing protocols for WMN's are not designed to adapt congestion. The simulation results using ns2 reveal that our congestion aware protocol performs better than AOMDV in terms of throughput, average end-to-end delay in the both static and dynamic scenarios with high traffic density.
