The paper discusses the highly successful European Esprit initiative Europort. The initiative migrated 35 industrial codes to parallel platforms in a portable way, covering almost the whole spectrum of industrial applications for which HPC is essential. Where costly high-computing power was the main bottleneck for numerical simulation, the availability of parallel software now allows a substantial step forward. The paper considers the follow up project Europort-D, managed by the Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) of the German National Research Center of Information Technology (GMD). For ten different application areas, new end users have demonstrated the business benefits parallel-computing technology can provide for their industry
