The author argues that extensive `hands-on' exposure is central to engineering education, and more necessary than ever in the light of superficial and alienated learning resulting from increasing abstraction and curricular overload. He urges a broader approach to the provision of experiential learning opportunities, examines a range of alternative modes of laboratory work, and attempts to articulate some principles to guide the design of laboratory programs, reporting on a number of case studies currently being undertaken at the University of Cape Town. This is a coordinated program of demonstrations, `tasks', and projects supported by the development a cost-effective set of modules with a strong emphasis on simplicity and conceptual clarity
