This article explores the context of the information systems (IS) professional who conducts practitioner-based inquiry research in the IS discipline in his workplace environment and lists five anchors on which such research is based. The author suggests that the production and creation of ‘new’ knowledge by an IS professional is not simply IS theory applied to IS practice – it is a different kind of knowledge. The IS professional whose practices are grounded in IS theories, must be aware of ongoing research that informs his IS practices and continually refine his skills through a rigorous process of self-reflection.
