This presentation discusses a new class of cathodes which rely upon electric field-emission along insulating surfaces. Field emission occurs when electrons tunnel from the metal substrate onto the diamond surface. Once on the surface they are accelerated to the positively biased gate electrode where some fraction of these electrons are emitted into vacuum.
