High Voltage / Extra High Voltage over-head lines performance to the lightning strikes can be determined by using lightning strike to ground density level. Thus, an evaluation of the High Voltage / Extra High Voltage over-head lines performance calculation can be accurately done using the density of lightning strike to ground on regions that are passed through the transmission lines. Based on the calculation when it is found above the standard design of the transmission lines, there will be improvements to increase the performance itself. Lightning strikes density data found by the lightning strikes detection system will provide two data, which are: lightning strikes to ground density level and striking points. When both data are combined with coordinate location data of a high voltage / extra high voltage over-head lines using Global Positioning System (GPS), it will be known the unsafe level of lightning strikes in the transmission lines. A Severity Indexes method will count the unsafe level of high voltage / extra high voltage over-head lines with consideration of tower parameter, geographic tower location and density level of lightning strikes to ground. This method is useful for determining all unsafe points along the transmission lines which will be compared with the data of broken insulators in transmission lines. Thus, it can be optimised in the determination of repaired towers by economical consideration and reparation reliability at the exact tower of reducing failures and increasing performance.
