We surveyed and studied several field emitters for use in lighting. They were tested in miniature flood lamps with cathodo-luminescent phosphor screens. The test formats were 1) lamps pumped, baked, side-gettered and sealed off; 2) lamps pumped, baked, forward-gettered and sealed off; 3) lamps left open and tested in an ultra-high vacuum system (10-10 torr); 4) lamps tested in pulsed mode, 10% duty. We present life and performance data on each of these test formats. We offer an opinion on the suitability of field emitters for lighting applications.
