We describe the design and implementation of the Java Automated Image Storage and Retrieval (JAISR) tool, a recording and retrieval system for digital images, based on retrieval by shape similarity. The system has been designed in order to permit the retrieval of the images recorded relying only on an approximate sketch of one of the objects contained in the image searched. It is equipped with a user-friendly graphic interface, can be accessed through the network in a client-server mode, and is totally platform-independent, since it requires only the presence of a Java-enabled browser on the client
