Quasi-three-level lasers have become highly efficient sources in the near and mid infrared; by direct emission or as pump sources for nonlinear conversion. Understanding their special spectroscopic properties and laser dynamics is the key to an efficient laser design and high output power, as demonstrated by the Er3+:YAG SSHCL.
