A cost-effective solution for enhanced performance of microstrip patch antennas is proposed in this paper. The squarering type metasurfaces are introduced and proved to have diamagnetic characteristics by using two retrieval methods. The conventional probe-fed linearly and circularly polarized patch antennas are shown to have simultaneous improvement in terms of broadside emission, bandwidths and efficiencies.
