Proposed emissions reduction targets as well as the scarcity of fossil fuel resources necessitate the transition of the current energy system towards a renewable-based supply. Regarding this as an international trend, it is relevant to study this issue on the world-wide scale. This study focuses on the development of a simulation technique based on linear optimization to study the impacts of large-scale integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the electricity supply system at world-wide scale. The model has been examined versus actual data and calibrated through an iterative process. The model is then applied to study the economical and environmental impacts of wind power on the electricity generation system. Regarding the dependencies of the resulting effects on the design of the base electricity system, penetration share of wind power as well as exogenous parameters, sensitivity analyses on these factors have been performed. The influential role of international exchange as a solution option for large-scale integration of wind power is studied further.
