It is widely focused on by the global researchers that distributed generation (DG) can enhance reliability of electric power system. The microgrid partition strategy is an important operation that can enhance reliability of electric power system. This paper presents an impact study on a DG connected to the distribution networks and proposes rooted tree to model DG island separation according to the radial structure. The advanced genetic algorithm and optimization 0-1 programming are then given for maximizing flexibility of network reconfiguration, which is to determine proper splitting points to split the entire interconnected distribution network into microgrids ensuring generation/load balance and satisfaction of transmission capacity constraints when microgrids are unavoidable. The verification of the microgrid partition strategy is proven with simulations on 7-bus and 23-bus test system.
