Control challenges on the interconnected southern African grid

Control problems of frequency and tie-line schedules occur in interconnected systems. Automatic generation control (AGC) with tie-line bias will need to be installed within the southern African power pool. Other problems are small signal oscillations, interaction between AC and DC systems, and auto-reclose philosophy. An overview of these problems with solution strategies is presented.
