Flow held numerical simulation of underwater torpedo launching was performed using the commercially available CFD software FLUENT based on the Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equations and k-epsilon turbulence model. The computational domain includes flow field in launch tube and front of the submarine head. Axisymmetric model was used in the simulation and torpedo appendages such as fins, rudders and propeller were not taken into account. The tube inlet was modeled as pressure inlet boundary and the value used was the data measured in a previous experiment. Moving mesh method was used to solve the relative movement problem of the torpedo and tube. Validity of the CFD model is verified using data from experiment. Characteristic of the launching flow field was obtained and pressure distribution on torpedo surface was also given. The simulation results can be regarded as a reference in the optimal design of torpedo and launch tube.
