The history of ground-based vertical-incidence sounding of the ionosphere is outlined. The ionosonde network serves for the patrol of the quiet or disturbed state of the ionosphere. Duration of the ionosphere F region peak parameters disturbance is compared with total electron content quiet times and sudden ionospheric disturbances detected by radio signal deterioration
