An experimental study has been implemented to investigate the effect of oscillatory flow on longitudinal heat spreading in a thin rectangular heat spreader. The impetus of the present study is to enhance the heat dispersion in a thin rectangular heat spreader for modern flat panel display devices. The experimental results show that the oscillatory flow yields the dispersion enhancement and the temperature gradient within a rectangular heat spreader is decreased significantly. The flow oscillation shows the decrease of the temperature difference between hot spot and cold region to 38.9% in vertical installation and 47.5% in horizontal installation. The experimental correlations on the heat dispersion enhancement for the installation directions are proposed as a function of the tidal displacement and the imposing frequency of the flow oscillation.
