A simple analytical method for the analysis and design of electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structures formed by via-holed metal patches is presented. Contrary to a known approach, this technique correctly predicts the first stopband, which is often utilized in printed antenna applications, and significantly extends the frequency range of analysis by including complex propagation constants. The approach is verified by comparisons with results of commercially available software.
