A high-performance system, which consists of a PC-486, a motion-estimation processor, DCT/IDCT processor, an image grabber, and a camera, is presented for real-time video image compression applications. Also, the motion-estimation and DCT/IDCT processors operate at 12.5 MHz and act as backend processors for the PC-486 through the Vesa local-bus interface. The motion-estimation processor takes around 100 μs to finish computing the motion vector with a tracking range of -8~+7 for each 16×16 block, and, the DCT/IDCT processor takes around 10 μs to compete the two-dimensional DCT/IDCT for each 8×8 block. Totally, for each 256×256 image frame, the system presented takes around 25.6 ms and 10 ms for computing the motion vectors and two-dimensional DCT/IDCT coefficients individually. Therefore, its performance is already good enough for various real-time video image compression applications
