Client/server based man-machine interface for level I and level II control systems

The author describes client/server computing and how this technology is being implemented in advanced process control systems. A high-level description of the technology implemented in an upgrade of a large distributed control system is presented. The initial cost of hardware for the client/server implementation described here is less than that required for a traditional implementation. Due to the large content of packaged software, the development time for the total system is less. The package software and custom code can be bundled into reusable components. Users learn to be power users through the use of desktop software and accessible networked data.<
