A handprinted Chinese character database is introduced. Features of characters in the database are analyzed in order to develop a handprinted Chinese character recognition method based on relaxation matching. An analysis shows that this method, which is one of the most accurate methods for handprinted Kanji, is also successful in recognizing handprinted Chinese characters. The results will be used to modify the method to improve its performance for handprinted characters
