Control system analysis based on internal energy method

In order to gain insight into dynamic and feedback control systems' behavior, the author has introduced a phase space notion, applicable to any linear system. A linear transformation suitably chosen allows for the definition of generalized position and velocity coordinates, and generates the parametric description of dynamic trajectories, which are shown to be energetic levels analogous to the phase plane representation. This parametric representation, given in the form of bilinear and quadratic forms of generalized position and velocity coordinates, defines different energy components of the system, such as kinetic, potential, dissipated or absorbed, exchanged through the control action, or stored within the system. It indicates also which parameters of the system are responsible for different energy components. Thus, parameters responsible for storage and natural frequencies or those involved in the dissipation and establishing damping characteristics are identified.<
