A unique approach to antenna modeling

A technique for modeling the gain and phase-shift patterns of antennas is presented. The technique is based on enhancements to an existing antenna simulation. Applicable to virtually any antenna type of system, the method combines deterministic and empirical algorithms. The result is a fast-executing simulation which offers an empirical approach to defining a basic pattern, as well as the validity of fundamental electromagnetic principles to maintain accuracy. Emphasis is placed on the simplicity of computation and the ease with which a modeler not expert in electromagnetic theory may configure an antenna simulation. Examples of the results modeling several antenna types, including electronically steered phased arrays, and monopulse configurations, for both the copolarized and cross-polarized aspect, are given. Methods for modeling patterns based on varying levels of definition, or on actual pattern measurements, are included. Improvements to the methodology, by which some of the more subtle nuances of phased array simulation have been achieved, are presented. The potential of this modeling technique for real-time implementation is explored.<
