Design of superconducting magnets for the SSC

It is shown that in order for a superconducting magnet to operate reliably at a given field the design should have sufficient superconductor to allow operation at currents significantly less than the cable critical current. In addition, sufficient copper should be included in the cable to give stability. Such considerations, their basis, and their application to the design of 5 cm bore diameter SSC dipoles are discussed.<
