A demand feature of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is to support different levels of quality of service (QoS) as required by subscribers and their applications. To provide QoS, the UMTS backbone network needs an efficient QoS mechanism and a hardware platform to provide the demanded level of services on the UMTS core network. Network processors are emerging as programmable alternative to the traditional ASIC-based solutions in scaling up the data plane processing of network services. This paper presents a methodology of differentiated services (DiffServ) in UMTS backbone network based on the IXP2400 platform. DiffServ is a relatively simple but scalable IP-based technology, which can efficiently provide QoS in DiffServ supporting networks. In this paper, several different schemes are discussed in detail and implemented on the ixp2400 platform for the scheduling and buffer management components of UMTS DiffServ model.
