In manufacturing and servicing of electrical devices, insulation thickness has to be accurately measured. A cost effective and very user-friendly digital instrument is designed and named as Smart Logger. This consists of three parts, digital micrometer, auto tool and processing unit. The major drawbacks and the difficulties of the conventional methods of measuring lengths can be avoided by using this digital instrument. The digital micrometer device can be used to measure curvatures of arcs, spherical surfaces etc. as well as linear lengths similar to those measured by conventional micrometer screw gauge. The auto tool can be placed on any moving surface and the movement of the surface in 2D is measured. The main advantage of this device is the possibility to connect to any length-measuring device such as calipers, traveling microscopes and cathetometers without concerning the least measurement and the coincided amounts. The length measurements can be read directly from the display with a high accuracy. The processing unit is the heart of the instrument, which handles all the aforementioned components. It has a keypad to perform various operations, a digital display to read the measurement and a memory to store the measurements. Smart Logger 2.0 is the software, which is designed by using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 programming software to interface the Smart Logger instrument with the computer through the serial port. The software is designed on Microsoft Windows environment and has various functions of device selection, calibration, restore, graph, file save/load and the serial port settings. In order to attain the maximum accuracy and the stability of measurements, this instrument is basically designed on digital electronics using economical good electronic components with high reliability.
