The advantages of implementing a digital audio equalizer using multirate sampling techniques vs. fixed sampling are presented. A theoretical discussion of multirate sampling equalization design issues such as processor computational bandwidth, number of equalizer bands, frequency resolution in a particular band, and filter type and order are reviewed and weighted accordingly. In addition to those multirate sampling equalizer design concepts, an actual implementation is described. A seven slider high-resolution digital audio equalizer has been developed using the Motorola DSP56001 on the NeXT Machine
