The authors define a new property for Fourier descriptors that they call stability which expresses the fact that a low level divergence in the invariant Fourier descriptors does not induce a noticeable distortion of the shape. They construct a complete and stable set of invariant Fourier descriptors with regard to the starting point on the curve and the direct group of similarities in the case of closed contours. Finally, they give an example of handwritten classifier illustrating the importance of stability
