This paper analyses and models different types of defects that can arise on the shield of coaxial cables. The reflection produced and the electromagnetic field radiated in the environment when a test signal impinges on the faults are calculated. The theoretical results, validated by the comparison with experimental measurements, are necessary to assess the fault location capability and sensitivity of cable testing procedures based on the use of reflectometry techniques or field sensors.
