The paper examines a variety of mechanisms that can shift or broaden the frequencies of acoustic phonons in quantum dots. These mechanisms take on added significance in view of recent indications that a number of potential applications of quantum dots-including some approaches to quantum computing-may be limited by decoherence effects caused by acoustic-phonon interactions in quantum-dot systems.
