It is shown that by varying the tap coefficients of a generalized transversal filter structure consisting of a tapped cascade of identical FIR subfilters, it is possible to implement an FIR digital filter with adjustable magnitude response. By choosing a few different FIR structures as subfilters, an overall FIR filter with a wide variation in magnitude response can be realized. An implementation of the proposed programmable FIR filter using a commercially available DSP chip is illustrated along with experimental results.
