Design, analysis and development of a multistage axial-flux permanent magnet synchronous machine

An axial-flux topology, together with the use of the strong coercive forces of today's rare-earth permanent magnets, combine to form machines suitable for high torque, low speed applications. A 3 kW single- and 6 kW double-stage machine was developed for the investigation into the improvement of the power-to-mass ratio in a multistage configuration. Producing torques of 36 Nm and 70 Nm respectively at 750 rpm, highlights their suitability for such applications, one being a direct in-wheel drive for an electric vehicle.
