Design optimisation of a distributed feedback laser wavelength converter integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers in line was performed. It was found that, by increasing the SOA length on the output side, both the conversion efficiency and the optical signal-to-noise ratio could be increased. With an increase in SOA length on the input side, the conversion efficiency improves at the cost of the OSNR. Guidelines for designing DFB lasers with respect to the grating coupling coefficient and the length were also derived. The results indicate that the integration of SOAs significantly improves both the conversion efficiency and the optical S/N ratio
