The broadband fixed wireless environment requires different - usually lower-order - modulation schemes than similar fiber-optic or coaxial cable-based networks. Practical issues over lower-order versus higher-order modulation is one of the main reasons driving new wireless-specific standards for broadband fixed-wireless access. This paper introduces a new approach, one that allows the extension of existing land-based standards into the wireless domain. After discussing the key differences between wireless and land-based solutions, this paper will discuss a transparent modulation scheme, based on a recently introduced technology called Signal Code Modulation (SCM). The paper then presents an example scenario where SCM extends the DOCSIS protocol - a cable-based standard - into the wireless world. Finally, the paper explores the economic advantages of this new approach, in contrast to wireless-specific standards.
