A highly channel-scalable N × N optical cross-connect (OXC) based on tunable fibre Bragg gratings is proposed. The channel scalability of the proposed OXC is owing to cascadability of individual routing modules which perform routing only for specified wavelength channels. The routing function of a 3 × 3 routing block of the proposed OXC using four OC-192 channels with a channel spacing of 0.8 nm is demonstrated, as is the upgradability of the number of ports and wavelength channels
