We analyze the performance of the hybrid multiuser interference cancellation scheme when each user in the same group has different received signal power. On the basis of this analysis, it is shown that the conventional HIC which divides the active users into several groups of equal size experiences a performance degradation due to the large difference in received signal powers when the power control is not applied or imperfect. We propose a new improved HIC scheme that divides the active users into groups of variable size according to their received powers using a clustering algorithm. Numerical examples illustrate that the BER performance of the proposed HIC scheme is superior to that of the conventional HIC in the case of imperfect power control or no power control
